The green pea is the small spherical seed of the pod fruit Pisum sativum, an annual plant with a life cycle of one year. The immature peas are consumed throughout the world as a vegetable, fresh, frozen or canned. Green Peas are highly nutritious and an excellent source of cholesterol-lowering fiber. Their high fiber content makes them effective for helping manage blood-sugar disorders like diabetes, by preventing blood sugar levels from rising rapidly after a meal.
